Motocross Saved My Life's, Mental Health In Motion PTSD Awareness Ride
PTSD DIAGNOSIS AND THE BIRTH OF THE AWARENESS RIDE |
Welcome friends. As part of my personal journey moving forward, I have visualized doing this PTSD, Trauma and Mental Health Awareness Ride, for quite some time.
As a T-3 complete and below paraplegic, the Author of Motocross Saved My Life From Its Darkness, and a multiple trauma Survivor, I have been training for this 400 kilometre Ride since January 1st, 2022. My wife and I have spent time in both Swift Current, and Humboldt recently.
The upcoming awareness Ride celebration, is a 400 kilometre Hand Cycle Ride from the Saskatchewan Hockey Hall of Fame in Swift Current, Saskatchewan, to Humboldt.
My life changing crash in 2011, on the race track, fortunately left me with the ability to use my arms.
I have no voluntary movement or feeling below my arms. This was a blessing as I flat lined on the operating table four times, and a priest was brought in to pray with my wife. After 8 months of medical incarceration, I was given only 5-10 years to live given the severity of my injuries and known associated complications.
I was diagnosed by a psychologist in 2017, with Post traumatic stress disorder. I knew something was wrong, but did not know what! It was scary, I was afraid, lonely, and isolated. I was not only entertaining, but also replaying some of the worst imaginable thoughts of self harm, constantly.
My biggest fear, was that I was going to lose something. But that did not happen. It was just the opposite. As I began to heal, and continue to, my days are now full of a light, hope and an inner happiness that I have never experienced. I also believe that after my own personal experiences, that I feel many may be affected, and not even know it. My experience has shown me, through my own story and those of others; is that PTSD can and does have a silent and invisible, ripple effect on the lives of those affected.
Come join us and ride alongside, walk or run, all in an effort to bring awareness to living with PTSD, overcoming trauma, and keeping mental wellness conversations as a top priority. We will depart the Swift Current Arena at 11:00 AM on September 7th, 2022. Come join us for a handshake, a smile, and maybe even come log a mile or two! We will gather with the community of Humboldt at the Curling Club, and celebrate Mental Health upon our arrival in that City, by sharing our story of living with PTSD. You are all more than welcome to come join us. We will be riding into Humboldt, at approximately 12:30 pm, on Monday September 12th. I will speak at the Curling Club at 1:00 pm. We are excited at the opportunity, and look forward to meet you all.
